Chapter 76 probably won't work.
"It's clear that all the clues point to Maronny."
Levi looked at Gordon, "But we know it's impossible."
The mayor is protecting Maroney; this is something they just went through.
"What does this mean? We all know Maroney wouldn't go after the mayor."
Gordon looked puzzled. "We all know that, so what's the point of the guys behind the scenes doing all this unnecessary work?"
Seeing Gordon's puzzled expression, Levi couldn't help but sigh inwardly.
As expected, the drawbacks of having such a short history are showing; it seems like these guys in Gotham have single-threaded thinking.
"We know these things, but others don't."
Li Wei said, "The guys behind the scenes definitely have other motives. Let's wait and see what's going on."
Whoever did all this, the person behind it must have had their own purpose. We just need to see who benefits from it.
Whoever benefits from this is the biggest mastermind behind it all!
After Li Wei's explanation, Gordon nodded.
He wasn't stupid; he understood immediately after Li Wei explained it to him briefly.
After discussing it, the two decided that they should continue the investigation until the mastermind behind it was revealed.
The surveillance footage showed the black sedan driving away from the hotel again.
"Investigate this vehicle's movements, focusing on the abandoned docks in the South and East districts," Gordon ordered into the walkie-talkie, his voice brooking no argument.
As we left the hotel, it started to drizzle, and the raindrops pattered against the umbrella.
Li Wei opened his umbrella, and rainwater slid down the edge, wetting his trouser legs.
"The mayor has always favored Maroney."
Gordon's voice was muffled by the sound of rain. "The two years Falcone and Maroney have been fighting each other more and more fiercely. Now that the mayor is dead, Gotham is probably going to be in chaos."
Li Wei remained silent. He recalled the man's figure from the surveillance footage and felt a strange sense of familiarity.
He took out his phone from his pocket and pulled out the information he had previously collected about Gotham's underground forces.
My finger swiped across the screen and landed on a group photo of the core members of the Maroni family.
In the photo, Maroni stands in the middle with an arrogant smile, with several burly men standing behind him.
One of the burly black men, whose physique was remarkably similar to the man in the surveillance footage, was none other than He Mang, whom he had previously reprimanded at the police station.
"Raging bull," Li Wei muttered, tapping the screen with his fingertip.
"Maroni's most trusted henchman, the guy who was caught by us last time but was later released on bail because the mayor intervened."
Gordon leaned closer for a look, then frowned. "I've got someone tracking his movements."
When the two returned to the police station, it was brightly lit.
In the large conference room, several police officers were hunched over a table organizing documents. On the Gotham map on the wall, several territories belonging to the Maroney and Falcone families were already marked.
Li Wei sat at his desk with a blank sheet of paper spread out in front of him. He drew a layout of the hotel on it with a pencil, his fingertip pausing at the 18th floor.
"There were no traces at the scene, and the car eventually headed south. Is there some connection between these events?" Li Wei suddenly asked.
Gordon looked up: "Possibly. The South is Maroney's territory."
He had just finished speaking when a police officer ran over with a test report: "Chief, we've found the trail of the black sedan."
The Maroni family has been frequently transporting goods to the South Wharf recently, and this vehicle is one of the ones they've smuggled back.
Li Wei stood up and grabbed his coat from the back of the chair: "Let's go check out the docks."
Meanwhile, in a private villa in Gotham's South District, the light from a crystal chandelier illuminated the entire living room.
Maroni sat on a leather sofa, holding a glass of whiskey in his hand, the ice cubes clinking in the glass.
Standing before him was He Mang, a tall and upright man with his hands hanging at his sides and a respectful expression on his face.
"How's it going with the mayor?" Maroni took a sip of his drink, his gaze sharp as he looked at He Mang.
"It's all taken care of, Mr. Maroney."
He Mang's voice was low and deep. "The cooperation with the mayor was very pleasant, and he was very interested in our proposal."
Maroni nodded in satisfaction and patted He Mang on the shoulder: "Well done. Once we get through this crisis, the Southern District will be yours to manage."
"Thank you for your trust, sir." He Mang's lips curled into a smile.
"In fact, the mayor has some words for me to convey to you, sir."
He looked up at Maroni, who was wiping his pistol.
It was a gold-plated revolver, Maroni's beloved treasure.
Ever since Harvey broke into the bar, Maroney has been preparing this large-caliber, gold-plated revolver for himself, in order to protect himself in critical moments.
But ever since he got the gun, it seems he hasn't fired a single bullet.
"Oh? I wonder what the mayor wants to tell me."
Maroni was intrigued by He Mang's words. He had asked He Mang to meet with the mayor this time because it was inconvenient for him to appear in person.
His goal was simple: to hand over some of his businesses to the mayor in exchange for the mayor's protection.
To his surprise, the mayor actually delivered a message to him.
"The mayor said he hopes you will come to see him in person."
He Mang raised his head to look at Maroni, the humility in his eyes vanishing without a trace.
"Go see him? Go again tonight, bring a gift and convey my apologies to the mayor."
Maroni didn't even look up, carefully wiping the pistol in his hand. "Tell the mayor that once this incident is over, I will personally visit him to express my apologies."
"No, no, no, Mr. Maroni, you've misunderstood me."
He Mang shook his head repeatedly, "I'm afraid I can't do what you're asking, and I can't convey this to the mayor."
"Is this the mayor's intention? The situation is unusual now; has this guy become obsessed with money?"
He Mang's words made Maroni frown. He raised his head angrily, vented his anger, and then hesitated.
"Then, take two gifts and express my apologies to him!"
After a moment's thought, Maroni gave in.
In his mind, any meeting was just a way for the mayor to raise the price.
"Sir, I'm afraid you didn't understand what I meant."
He Mang leaned forward, looking down at Maroni from his superior position. "I can't go where the mayor is right now."
Therefore, these words of gratitude can only be expressed by you personally.
Seeing He Mang's appearance, Maroni, who had spent his entire life in the underworld, knew exactly what had happened.
After only a slight pause of two seconds, he picked up the gold-plated revolver without hesitation and aimed it at He Mang.
Without thinking, he pulled the trigger.
A look of surprise flashed in He Mang's eyes. In his mind, Maroni was a good-for-nothing.
This time, however, things were somewhat unexpected for him; Maroni was surprisingly decisive.
Faced with a life-or-death crisis, He Mang also felt a pang of regret.
If you clearly regret your actions, you could simply kill the other person; why put yourself in danger for the sake of that twisted sense of fun?
It was too late to say anything now, so he steeled himself and lunged at Maroni.
