Chapter 110: When Gods Lose Patience
Chapter 110: When Gods Lose Patience
In a fight the rich man tries to save his face, the poor man his coat.
Zane had gotten up by the support of the door but he was in no condition to leave the Cathedral as fast as possible.
He had Milo with him. He had chains with him. He was tired. His wrists were broken. And not to mention, two Enforcers blocked his way.
He might ignore Varikh but Kairon couldn’t be ignored even if he tried.
The Enforcer was endowed with flames.
He had a flaming sword and a crown on his head and even if Kairon didn’t hit Zane, the gutterborn would melt to death anyway.
Kairon had become the sun.
The sun Zane spat on.
But Kairon couldn’t let Zane die on his own.
He needed the last hit. He wanted the credit.
He raised his flaming sword above his head and while clutching Milo, Zane watched the sword coming down him.
But his eyes went shut on their own.
However...
SHRILL!
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaagggghhhh!!"
A shriek filled with pain echoed.
Zane was forced to open his eyes and they remained open.
Kairon screamed in pain in front of him while holding his right leg.
The same leg that Zane had bit.
But he wasn’t wailing because the pain from biting came back, he wailed because of something else.
Something that Zane never expected to see.
The Enforcer Kairon, before he could kill Zane...
"That wasn’t a wise decision, my lady."
A sword pierced the leg of the man wearing a crown of flames.
Zane watched the sword with squinted eyes and for some reason, he recognised it.
He knew the sword.
And even if he didn’t know the sword, he knew the voice that came after the sword.
It was Hena’s bodyguard.
And the sword belonged to his lady.
Hena Myreth.
The sword hilt had the emblem of scales and if not for that, Zane would have never recognised it.
STEP!
STEP!
Two people stepped forward from the crowd and all eyes went there.
Kairon, Varikh, and the Emberlord all turned their heads and the moment they saw the girl, their nose wrinkled.
Zane and Xavier also saw her and the Ashbearer showed nothing on his face but Zane was filled with frowns.
It was really Hena and her bodyguard.
Hena was a Halocrat and still dared to interrupt and defy the Emberlord.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Coin erupted.
Hena didn’t answer and dashed towards Zane.
Zane flinched seeing her coming towards him but she stopped beside Kairon.
"You have something of mine." She said and held her sword.
Kairon’s eyes widened.
"No. No. Don’t take it ou—"
PLUCK!
Hena pulled out her sword from Kairon’s leg.
Kairon fell to his knees, cursing Hena’s entire bloodline.
His crown of flame and his flaming sword vanished and now Kairon appeared like a gutterborn, that was to say, miserable.
"You bitch!"
Varikh was just beside Hena and forgetting Zane, the Enforcer lashed on the girl.
But before Hena could show her skills to this man...
"We will be banished, my lady."
THUD!
Varikh fell face first on the floor.
As the Enforcer fell, Zane saw the bodyguard standing behind him.
He watched both of them with wide eyes.
Hena subdued an Enforcer with simply her sword and the bodyguard did something that fainted or killed another Enforcer as well.
The Halocrats watched them standing in front of Zane and Milo and they began shouting for them.
"Traitor bitch!"
"Kill her too!"
"She is just like her father!"
"Traitor!"
"Forgotten Crown!"
"Fallen bitch!"
Curses hollered in the Cathedral and Zane watched Hena to see if she showed some kind of reaction.
But the girl remained cold as ever.
Her bodyguard did convey his anger by replying with curses as well.
Hena sensed Zane’s gaze on her and turned her head behind.
Zane averted his eyes but Hena spoke her first words to Zane.
"It’s crucial for you to stay alive, Zane Atlas. I am just playing my part."
Zane went into a deeper state of confusion as to what Hena had to do with him staying alive.
By now he had understood that Hena also wasn’t liked by the fellow Halocrats but that didn’t explain her helping Zane.
However, if he and Milo stayed alive, then Zane was ready to accept anything.
Hena and her bodyguard stood in front of the gutterborn, their backs facing Zane.
Kairon and Varikh laid on the floor.
Varikh was not moving and Kairon moved too much because of the pain.
Neither of them were in any position to fight Zane anymore but if that was the case, why was Hena and her bodyguard still in front of Zane protecting him? What was the reason?
"Useless. All of you. Useless to the last of your bones."
The Emberlord was the reason.
Kairon and Varikh might be useless but anyone would bet on their lives that the Emberlord wasn’t useless at all.
His scythe still rested in air with no support and veins had popped up on his head seeing the proceedings of the trial.
"I wanted the original relic. I didn’t get it. I wanted to ask the girl about her faith, I wasn’t able to do that either. I wanted to wake her from her slumber but she vomited blood on me in the most suspicious way. My inner light told me to perish that demonic entity and due to the incompetent Enforcers, I wasn’t able to do that as well. But it’s over now..."
The Emberlord ran his finger on his golden hair, wiped the blood from his face.
"I will do it myself."
The air changed.
Hena and the bodyguard turned vigilant but before they knew it...
WHISH!
"Your time hasn’t come yet, Myreth."
Coin was already in front of both of them.
Hena’s ever still face found dread as fear made its way to her.
But she raised her sword anyway.
"Don’t be ridiculous."
Coin waved his hand.
THRAMM!
Hena and her bodyguard were no longer in front of Zane.
They flew to the stage and crashed on the wall.
The Emberlord finally faced Zane and Zane finally faced the Emberlord.
Zane’s throat went parched and if not for Milo, his breath would have stopped on its own just by the sheer presence of the Emberlord.
That bloodied face and deep blue eyes, they shouldn’t belong to a Godman. They were more of a devil.
"Give her to me and you will live. No negotiations." Coin said.
Zane coughed.
"You are right. If it is about my sister, no negotiations indeed."
He was afraid but not enough to let go of Milo.
Coin seethed his teeth.
"So be it."
He raised his leg and did what the Enforcers failed to do.
He brought the leg right on Zane’s knee and...
CRACK!
Zane’s right leg turned inside out.
Coin broke Zane’s leg.
The Emberlord then reached out his hand and held Milo’s hair.
Milo had gone unconscious again.
Coin pulled the girl towards her.
But Zane didn’t let her go.
Even with a broken leg, his hands didn’t let go of Milo.
"You are not getting her, Emberlord. Break my legs, burst my eyes, cut my tongue, eat my heart, you will still not get my sister."
The Emberlord closed his eyes.
He let go of Milo’s hairs and opened his eyes once more.
Zane tried to crawl back but this time, instead of Milo, the Emberlord held both hands of Zane.
The hands that embraced Milo on his chest.
Coin held the hands and with wrinkles on his forehead, he began removing Zane’s hands from Milo.
Zane tried his best to fight with Coin’s strength but the man was an Emberlord.
"Anghh!"
Zane’s hands were spread out.
Milo wasn’t under protection anymore.
But to take Milo, the Emberlord also had to let go of Zane’s hands.
And when Coin would do that, Zane would again hold Milo.
Zane paid close attention to Coin’s movements and he would have succeeded if not for him making a blunder.
The blunder being...
Blinking.
That was all what Coin needed.
As Zane blinked, the Emberlord let go of Zane’s hand and in less than a second, the godman did it.
He held Milo by her neck.
