Requiem Of A Failed Hero

Chapter 408: Lineage

Chapter 408: Lineage

Raith was very confused, things were not quite adding up for him. From his perspective, he came here like a few hours ago. He was kidnapped and brought into a dark cave.

Thard - Harl was there and turns out the asura was trying to train him with it. Fine! He fell into the darkness of the cave and fought the dreadsoul an abomination that caused him so much growth.

He didn’t spend thirteen days fighting the dreadsoul, did he?

’No, there’s no way I would have...’

Raith shook his head. There were still tens of questions in his head, questions he couldn’t even sort as of now.

He looked at Hans, who was deliberating on where to start for Raith.

The reagent leader slowly raised his head and began explaining.

"It was over six hundred years ago. When the mercenary union was first created, those were its glory days. But those glory days existed because of the leader at that time."

Hans seemed to pause, emotion dripping in his voice as he continued:

"He was called The Divine Nightmare. He was the bond that kept the union together in all dimension and was a true leader."

Raith tried his best not to seem like an asshole and listened. But where was this conversation going to... Hans was looking too emotional to be able to navigate on his on.

"And so what happened to him..."

Hans brows furrowed, his voice came with subtle anger.

"He went against Ra."

"Ra?"

"Ra... is one of the early gods. In different culture, he is addressed different. But ultimately, he is known as the son god, the god of light, the god of divine fire."

Raith’s expression became grim. He didn’t like the idea that gods were already entering this conversation.

Currently, he was kind of doing everything he could to make sure he didn’t get entangled with any of them. Despite, fearing that there was every chance that all his attempt would become utter failure.

"In order to protect the last shadow-borne. The Divine Nightmare had to go against the sun god. Going against a god is not something that any player or hunter would want to do. So at that time many stopped following him."

His face carved out deep furiousity.

"But we that stayed with him, stayed and we fought with the armies of a god. I tell you, it was not easy, they were immortal and were like beings of light, burning us with lucent flames. We were utterly defeated."

"What happened to Divine Nightmare?"

The man’s brow frowned with sorrow, he loweredand shut his eyes painfully.

"He died. After killing the sun god’s general. The sun god struck him down."

"I see..."

’As expected this just proves to me that going against a god should never be something I consider doing’

The man’s eyes suddenly shot out with more resolve.

"But he didn’t leave us comfortless!"

He clenched his fist.

"The Divine Nightmare, our lord. He left us with a word. He said, whosoever defeats the shadow-Borne, is worthy of becoming our leader. Since, that day we have waited patiently for who can... many have tried, few have managed to run away with their lives, many more have lost it at the hands of the shadow-borne but none have ever defeated it and vanquished its darkness... until you."

He laid his eyes on Raith.

’...ah...’

It now made sense why they were all paying so much respect to him. But what interested Raith more and made more sense was that he now understood where the dreadsoul had gotten all those battle style it fought him with.

"You say that thing has been there for how many years now."

Hans thought about it and answered,

"Let’s say five hundred..."

It wasn’t millions of decades like he had thought before but defeating a creature of five hundred years was a good achievement for him.

It brought his memory back to the time he supposedly defeated an asura who had been trapped in the abyss for five hundred years.

Only turned out that his achievement was a fluke, the asura he defeated was a fake and he had only been allowed the victory so that things could proceed as it was planned.

But this was different. He spent thirteen days fighting an abomination of darkness and ended up defeating it. Raith felt like this was the only thing he had ever accomplished through sheer hardwork.

But something bothered him. He looked at Hans.

"What are you people and what is that shadow-borne? Why was this Divine Nightmare trying to protect it from the sun god? Is it not supposed to be a monster."

Hans nodded his head and started his explanation:

"The shadow-borne is a creature that was birthed out of a darkness that is not associated with the abyss nor the god of darkness."

"There’s a darkness like that?"

Raith had asked but after asking he was beginning to feel a familiar sense to what was being said.

"Yes... no one truly knows what it is. But it is said that there is a light and there is a darkness that is not related to any primordial or gods. The shadow-borne was a creature of such. It was why, the monster was inevitably strong. The sun god needed its core."

Raith showed some shock on his face but dismissed it before the lapse of a second, playing dumb and asking:

"He needed its core? For what?"

Hans Cromwell answered:

"I’m not sure what for but it cannot be something good, that was why The Divine Nightmare protected it with everything he had. He believed that the core would be linked to the true darkness that has never existed. If a god gets his hands on it who knows what would have happened."

Everything was king of coming together for Raith. Thard - Harl said there was a heavy bounty on this monster, a god needed its core.

’Could it be the same god?’

Raith covered his lower face. If this was the case was it a good thing that Greed absorbed the core? And like his suspicion was, is this darkness related to his arts, [Dark Borne]?

With what happened back in the pit after he defeated the monster and also gaining shadow force. Which he had no idea what is.

There were more chances that thus had something to do with this his abilities... the darkness he found in himself or the crimson heart.

He let go of the thought and returned his gaze to the brawny man seating in front of him.

"Back to my second question. Who are you guys? You are telling me a story of six hundred years ago as if you were there yourself. Surely, you were there... so tell me... how in the multiworld is a human supposed to survive six hundred years?"

The man hesitated... his voice was silent for a couple of seconds then he spoke.

"We are what remains of the soulless."
